Some places grip our imagination with such pull, we forget they exist in reality. These places become intertwined with our identity, seeping into our subconscious and informing how we see the world. Kashmir looms large in the imagination of the subcontinent because we are told, as children, that it embodies all that is worth fighting for. In time, it forms our ideas around emancipation, liberty, and freedom. In Kashmir’s theater of conflict, we learn to see the lasting effects of a continent carved up, and the endurance of a people robbed of everything they ever loved.
